Great again to be in action after a forced "rest" last week due to the icy conditions. This winter is proving to be quite challenging with lots of ever-changing weather conditions. Not so long ago it was +15c and bright sunshine and then comes sleet, snow and ice. It puts extra strain on us at parkrun every week having to check the course to make sure it's safe enough to go ahead. Two events in Sweden have been forced to close most of the winter Huddinge and Kungsängen due to the nature of their courses! And now as I look out of the window writing this report early Sunday morning it's snowing again!

So anyway, yesterday was fabulous to welcome 75 people of all ages and abilities to have a go at Örebro parkrun. Indeed we had a real international flavour with South Africa, Denmark, Greenland, Russia, USA & England (hope I've not left anyone out) being represented.

A great story; we had The Muller family from Denmark visit us on their way home from skiing in Sweden. All regular participants at Amager Faelled parkrun in Copenhagen, in fact Mum has now completed 425 times, daughter 350 times (and she's only 15!), the son 17 times and the Dad 472 times! That's awesome, great stuff guys.

Another Örebro parkrun milestone this week when Anders Pålhed completed his 50th time and therefore a eligible for his red 50 t-shirt - well done Anders.

We would like to see many many more people at Örebro parkrun including walkers and we will be promoting this over the coming months. Please help us spread the word as it's a perfect opportunity to be active in a friendly, group atmosphere, costs NOTHING and nobody ever comes last as we always have a Tail Walker - this week it was my daughter Sadie who has now been a volunteer 11 times and ran/ walked 24 times.

Örebro parkrun #93 run report – Paul Freyne 500 parkruns

DSC_0131

"My first parkrun was in Brisbane in 2012. My twins were about 7 months old and I was trying to get fit again to save my sanity! I was immediately welcomed by the people there and it became a routine Saturday morning, often with my husband running with the kids. Finishing off with coffee and 'fika' at the market's afterwards made for a very pleasant Saturday morning. It was such a great thing to do at a challenging time with young kids.

2019-01-26_12-51-32
Sara firade Australia day på Örebro parkrun i januari.

Fast forward 6 years or so and we arrived in Sweden to live for a while. I put a note on the triathlon club Facebook site and Matt was one of the first people to contact me. I was very happy to find that there was a local parkrun and it has become a regular part of my life here. Through parkrun and cycling I was quickly welcomed into the local community and got to know both locals and expats. I have looked forward to my Saturday mornings ....running in sunshine, rain, ice and snow and in temperatures I would have never imagined venturing outside in previously. The fika at Naturens Hus after never disappoints and my expert opinion is that they have the best kanelbullar in Örebro (and hot chocolate) ....but of course it is all about the running ;)

I have also volunteered a few times which is an even better way to get to know people (although sometimes a little chilly in Winter but nothing some good clothes and a piece of cardboard to stand on won't fix!)

2019-03-03_11-15-33

I have completed my 50th parkrun here and participated in the great Christmas edition. I will be very sorry to do my last Örebro parkrun this Saturday before we return to the hot and steamy climate at home in Brisbane, Australia. I will miss all the people who have made me feel like I belong here ....not an easy thing when you are new and don't speak the language! parkrun truly is a global community.

I am sure we will be back at least for holidays if not for longer but in the meantime a big thank you to everyone."

Thank you Sara - and hope you´ll be back soon!

Örebro parkrun #91 run report – Back in Business!

_PBG5662.jpg
The feeling of being back in business again!

Well as they say in show business, what a difference a week makes and almost in our case it was from Thursday to Friday that the course went from being unsafe to safe! That's the way the winter can play out in the Nordics. With all 3 events in Stockholm unfortunately closing due to icy conditions we are still showing that winter has it's stranglehold hold on us in certain parts of the country. We were just really happy that the course inspection on Friday afternoon gave us positive news that we could go ahead with only about 10% that was still icy!

Untitled
Shorts on show - brave boy Noha!

Wow, what a morning we had in store for us when we turned up at 08.45 to set up the start/ finish area. Glorious sunshine around +2c and quite simply a stunning winter morning. Indeed, it seemed the word had certainly got around as slowly but surely people started turning up and before not too long we had a nice crowd - totaling 66 walkers, joggers and runners in the end. With a couple of brave souls baring legs, obviously in the belief that less weight = faster times! It's so amazingly great for me personally that we can attract such a crowd of people in the middle of winter. At least 4 newbies and 13!!! YES 13 new PB's! I'm not sure what you guys put in your porridge this week but it certainly worked!

Bowl of porridge!

As we constantly say, EVERYONE is welcome at parkrun and yesterday was nice to see several groups walking the 5 km course around Rynningeviken.

Indeed as one of regular runners Mikael showed us being injured doesn't have to stop you being active, nice one Mikael.

We are currently 3 Run Directors at Örebro parkrun, myself, Viveka and Lotta and so were really pleased when Peter & Åsa, regular volunteers and runners/ walkers at parkrun said they were keen to also get involved as RD's. (as shown below). A really enthusiastic pair and I'm sure you will all join me in welcoming them to our amazing team.
