52 hardy souls at the start

Saturday didn't disappoint in terms of atmosphere at Örebro parkrun being our 88th event and we are slowly creeping towards that magical 100. In fact, as long as we don't have to cancel anytime in the next 11 weeks then we will hit the 100 mark exactly on our 2nd birthday! Double reason to celebrate that event.

Yesterday was fun for me on a personal note as we had our nephew staying with us from England. Henry a good track runner himself ran with my family, in true parkrun style, although somewhat colder than he is normally used to. He, my son Hugo and wife Ulrika all ran together with my daughter Sadie enjoying a walk with the Tail Walker gang!

Tail Walkers unite!

At least 5 new people (plus a few that didn't regsister in time) today which is awesome considering we are in the middle of winter, it's "slightly colder" and there are plenty of other exciting things to do such as skiing, skating etc. However, those that did turn up certainly weren't disappointed with the course, being in perfect condition.

Great to see several walkers again today highlight that parkrun is open for everyone as long you take yourselves around the 5km course. Amongst those walkers was Tahlia who visiting her family in Örebro all the way from Australia; she normally takes pictures at her local parkrun in Yamba NSW, where the rest of her family are all active. How cool is that!

We always need people to join us as volunteers, it's great fun, really easy and you'll be ensuring parkrun keeps operating for free, EVERY week. Drop us a line if you can help, either on facebook or email: orebrohelpers@parkrun.com

Bästa uppslutningen i Norden. TACK! Ni är bäst!
Varje vecka har vi också 6-7 funktionärer. Den här veckan var det: Sara Moser, Tony Bergman, Gunnviol Kattilakoski, Malin Wiremalm och Nicklas Forsling. TACK! Ni är guld värda!

"barnvagnar" are very popular at parkrun

The first parkrun of 2019. On this day last year we saw 37 people complete our 5 km course around Rynningeviken, today we welcomed 68, which is some increase indeed! A trend we've seen for a while at Örebro parkrun and are loving the fact that we are attracting a great mix of people, ages, backgrounds, abilities and genders.

parkrun86-25
Jimmy - photographer turned runner!

We talk about sense of community all the time at parkrun and it's really evident at Örebro with many of our volunteers that when they are not helping out they come down and take part, walking or running. Jimmy (above) and Annica (below) are, to name just a few, examples of this. Both have volunteered many times, Jimmy is famed for his awesome pics and Annica even had a stint as a Run Director.

Great to be "back in business" with a new parkrun year, lots of opportunities to grow and see even more people be active with our already large "fan-base".

Örebro parkrun #85 run report – årskrönika!

Happy New Year 2019 from Karol

Matt:

2018 was definitely the year that Örebro parkrun established itself for real and became widely known around Örebro and surrounding area. I talk a lot about the “point of critical” mass where the momentum of the event will mean it will continue to grow organically with less of a “continuous push” from the core team. The message and ethos of what parkrun stands for is being digested and you only have to take part once to be bitten by the parkrun bug!

Here are just a few of the memories that will stay with me from this memorable year!

Tove
We have a wonderful gang of volunteers, in fact 107 different people since April 2017! Including the core team of myself, Karl, Viveka and Lotta we are passionate and simply love parkrun. One person that was really passionate about our event was Tove who tragically passed away suddenly in July of this year! Tove was involved with the event from the early days, before we even started and her passion and energy was awesome. She really helped us spread the word, had great ideas and simply got stuck in! Anyone who met her would be infected by her warmth and her passion for spreading the joy of being active to literally everyone. Never more so when dressed a Smurf at her running club’s race for juniors, which was picked up by two of her club-mates at our parkrun that day (pic below). I really hope she is looking down on us and is proud of what we are achieving at parkrun.

Örebro parkrun #63

Milestones
Part of the parkrun concept ids to encourage consistency in being active; hence why we hold our events EVERY Saturday, same time, same place. To reward this and motivate people to strive further you become eligible for “Milestone” t-shirt at certain intervals. The 1st being 50 times you participate as a parkrunner/ walker and/or 25 times as a volunteer. Then for parkrunners it’s 100, 250, 500 to begin with!

At Örebro parkrun we have celebrated 10 “Milestoners” this year (50), starting with Mikael Sandberg in July and most recently Johan Sjö in December. This is truly outstanding considering we have so far held 85 events and 9 of our 10 milestones are home-grown.

Micke celebrating his 50th parkrun with Lars who also did his 50th parkrun in 2018

Världens Barn

On the 29th September we held our parkrun as usual but this time in connection with the local radio station and their annual event to raise money and awareness for the charity “Världens Barn”. The event was a massive success on many levels not only the fact that 167 took part, with 15 amazing volunteers. At least 50 people came to parkrun for the 1st time which meant we could reach a wider audience than normal introducing parkrun to many new faces. Raising over 10,000kr and I even got chance to choose 3 songs that mean a lot me, live on Radio P4!

It's definitely an event we want to repeat next year.

Summer Heat – Bathing in Svartån
The record heatwave we endured this year certainly made running more “interesting”! Not much to say apart from lets hope it returns next year.

Det vällde in folk. Vilken uppslutning – 193 deltagare och 11 funktionärer. Wow – nytt nordiskt rekord i antal deltagare.

Flest deltagare i Norden.

Man
blir glad ända in i hjärteroten.

Hans far hade i sista sekund blivit sjuk.

Jättepirrigt, självklart, men såååå roligt!
Enkelheten, prestigelösheten, kamratskapen och samtidigt sätta kroppen i rörelse i en vacker omgivning... what´s not to love!

DSC_7688.jpg
A new volunteer record across Sweden with 54 across 7 events and a fantastic 14 here in Örebro!

This was our 2nd Xmas parkrun and again it didn't disappoint, with 125 people turning up to complete our wintry 5 km course out and around Rynningeviken. The week leading up to Saturday our expert team of elves had been out inspecting the course on a daily basis and with help from Örebro kommun, who I must say have been great with us throughout our inception, we decided the course was good to go. A total of 14 wonderful volunteers ensured we were going to have a super "mysigt" Xmas parkrun, with snow, open-fires, pepparkakor, glögg and even 100 home baked cinnamon buns and lussekatter!

_DSC1647.jpg
Warmth and friendship around the parkrun fire

Yesterday we set a new record for the amount of volunteers at the 7 events across Sweden with 54 wonderful souls helping out, including 14 in Örebro. We had dedicated fire-starters, glögg-monitors, extra marshals on the course together with our usual band of amazing people that make parkrun so much fun week in week out. The atmosphere yesterday was so wonderful and it's such a great way to both celebrate Xmas and parkrun 2018, what we have achieved and community we are building.

Lars & Tony otherwise known as Numbers 3 & 4!

This week's run report is dedicated to all our amazing volunteers who make parkrun possible every week and of course keeps the event free and available to EVERYONE ...(more on this later..)

Grey, almost night-dark, damp and parts of the course slippy from ice that hadn't shifted during the week - that's what faced everyone at this week's parkrun. Fantastically it didn't deter 61 walkers and runners from taking part. In fact the ice didn't hinder 4 people from achieving new PB's - awesome! Nearly 10 1st timers (including those without barcodes), which really warms my heart to see new people still finding us out at this time of year.

We had visitors from the teams at Uppsala (Göran) and Haga parkruns (Anna) this week which is always nice to show off our stunning course in Örebro and for them to hopefully get inspiration for their own events.

Sara 50 parkruns

Now back to this week's theme which is all about our amazing, fantastic, awesome volunteers that make parkrun happen every week and means the event can stay free. There's an image within the traditional role models of clubs (föreningar) in Sweden that everyone member or indeed if you are a parent to a child who is a member then you have an "obligation" to help out at events; this can vary in frequency but often is seen as a burden, "something that just has to be done" to help the club survive financially. Invariably it's the same members that volunteer every time and it's common for the club to have to nag and remind it's members of their obligation.

This couldn't be further from the truth at parkrun! Although there is of course is a certain amount of work on the part of that week's Run Director in organising the volunteers, it's never felt as a burden and indeed is part of parkrun's concept; that volunteering is equally as rewarding as taking part. Many of our helpers have been involved numerous times, just count the the "25 t-shirts" and it's plain to see people just simply love it.

On a personal note, having brought parkrun to Örebro I am rewarded 10-fold every week in effort put out with that you feel part of something that matters to others, and can have an impact on the health and well being of the others. You have a sense of community.

It's awesome seeing new friendships forming whether it being the challenge of beating each other's PBs or simply just having a laugh and a coffee afterwards. The tasks are really simple, full instructions are given and there's a sense that we are part of a big family, with thousands of events happening all over the world. Sometimes you take part, sometimes you help out. Simple!

Volunteering at any event is important and it helps others, which gives you a sense of doing something good and helpful for others, and the volunteers are always highlighted and thanked before each event at the brief.

Team gathering before the parkrunners arrive

Experience parkrun just once and often you're hooked, you just want more and more of the atmosphere, warmth and unpretentious. After a while you want to give something back and helping out now and again as a volunteer is so rewarding. Give it a go.

Örebro parkrun #81 run report

24 nov 2018

24 nov 2018
Maria in action

"Saturday's crew"

Well done Örebro, you rock - 100 different volunteers within 80 events, again goes to show that when we build the right communities people want to be a part of it either as a participant or helping out as a volunteer. We really have so much fun within our volunteer teams and it's also incredibly rewarding encouraging others to be active in all shapes and forms.

"Camilla 1 - 0 Her son"

A funny little side story from yesterday's parkrun - Camilla came for the 1st time and I chatted with her before the start. Her Son who takes part at parkrun in Malmö had told her about us and so they had an idea that they would both run at their respective parkrun simultaneously. One made it but the other didn't, deciding instead to stay in bed - well done Camilla that's 1-0 to you.

18 new PB's yesterday!! That's awesome! Although we iterate that parkrun definitely ISN'T a race it's simply about taking part however you get yourselves around but of course we love to encourage progress and that's the beauty of registering and seeing your weekly results. Nothing better than forming new friendships with like-minded people, whether it's about sharing a coffee after parkrun or pushing each other to new PB's; it's all great stuff.

Roger and his daughter enjoying a well deserved fika

As you all know having a Fika together every week after the event is very much part of the "parkrun experience" and we really appreciate having Naturens Hus. To reward our loyalty they have given us an offer whereby if you show your barcode between 10.00 - 11.00 on Saturdays and buy a sandwich (smörgås) you get a free tea or coffee. Tack Naturens Hus.

"The obligatory group pic before the start"

Just another grey Saturday morning in early November? Nothing is dull and boring about Örebro parkrun and Saturday saw 76 people turn up and take part with 8 volunteers. This time last year we had 39 parkrunners, which by my maths is an increase of nearly 100%! This is a trend we've seen for the past few months and hopefully it means we've reached our "point of critical mass"! When, mainly through word-of-mouth recommendations, we will continue to grow and introduce parkrun to 1000's of new people; affecting lives for the better.

When I'm Run Director I really like to welcome "newbies" to our amazing event, making them feel straight at home as for some people it can be quite an ordeal to turn up to some strange "lopp" for the 1st time. This week was no different with lots of new faces, officially 7 plus some that didn't register or bring their barcodes.

One person we welcomed was Martin, who is a Run Director at a parkrun in Leipzig and came all the way here just to visit us! How cool is that?

This week also saw a new Nordic record at parkrun now with 22 events and 1206 parkrunners and volunteers, the highest number to date.

Finally, it was wonderful to see so many parkrunners filling Naturens Hus for "fika" afterwards, I counted at least 40 of us!  What a nice tradtion and lets keep it going.

Next week we have an Örebro parkrun legend joining us as a volunteer and we always need people so please, please let us know when you can help.

That's it for this time, see you all next week for Örebro parkrun #80
